Counselor
Instructor: Ms. Marshall

This is my tenth year as a school counselor in Prince William County and my eighth year at Bel Air Elementary School. Before coming to Bel Air, I served as an itinerant counselor for Neabsco, Vaughan, and Tyler Elementary Schools. I am currently a member of the American School Counselor Association, Virginia School Counselors Association and the Prince William Regional Counselors Association. I believe the role of the school counselor is to support each student socially, emotionally, and academically and ultimately, to help the students to become caring and successful individuals as well as life-long learners.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Bel Air Elementary School Counseling Program is to support and encourage students' personal, academic, and social growth through collaboration with school staff, parents, and the community in order to help students become lifelong learners and valuable citizens of their community.

Philosophy

The school counselor of Bel Air Elementary School believes:
* All students have dignity and worth and can be successful
* A school counseling program is an essential part of Prince William County Schools’ overall education process.
* Growth and learning are developmental; therefore, school counseling programs must be developmental and sequential.
* All students K-5 should have access to a full-time, state-certified school counselor to deliver the counseling program.

And that the school counseling program should:
* Provide a support network for all students, K-5, that includes school staff, parents, and community members
* Have opportunities for all students to receive counseling and guidance in the academic, career, and personal/social domains based on The American School Counselor Association Standards
* Help students to develop positive character traits and learn skills that will help them become productive citizens.
* Be planned and implemented in a way that considers all students' ethnic, cultural, racial, and special needs
* Use data to drive program development and evaluation

And that all school counselors in Bel Air Elementary School shall:
* Abide by the professional school counseling ethics as advocated by the American School Counselor Association
* Participate in professional development activities essential to maintain a quality school counseling program.

Individual Counseling
Students can be referred for counseling by their teacher, parent, counselor, staff member or self. Students have access to self-referral forms in their classrooms.

Classroom Guidance Lessons

Each quarter I will be doing classroom guidance lessons with different grade levels. Each class will receive 10 guidance lessons throughout the year. I also teach lessons at the request of teachers if they have a particular topic that they would like presented to their students.  Here are some of the topics covered in the different grade levels:

K: Communication skills, feelings, responsibilities as a student, appropriate school behavior

1st grade: positive work habits, I-Feel statements, personal safety, identifying abilities and interests

2nd grade: Friendship, peer pressure, coping strategies, goal setting, different forms of communication

3rd grade: Test-taking, careers relating to skills, abilities, and interests, decision making, responsibilities

4th grade: Problem solving, test-taking, personal safety (Safe at Home program), organization & time management

5th grade: Setting long-term goals, conflict resolution, changes and transitions (e.g. Middle School), careers

Character Counts - It's Respect Week!
Character Counts is a very important program at Bel Air Elementary School. We strongly encourage our students to work on demonstrating the six character traits: Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Trustworthiness, Citizenship and Fairness.

This week we are focusing on the character trait of RESPECT. Students who are respectful follow the golden rule – treat others the way you want to be treated.

Each day on the announcements students are being taught ways to be respectful at school. We are also having a Caught You Showing Character day on Thursday and all students should wear yellow on Friday.
